You won’t get high from CBD

No, CBD is not that. Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of hundreds of natural compounds found in cannabis and hemp that has been popping up in products across varying industries. Another well-known cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a compound known for its psychoactive effects (not CBD). Even though THC and CBD share a similar formula, there is one fundamental difference in their molecular structure that gives each compound unique medicinal properties: THC has a cyclic ring while CBD has a hydroxyl group. CBD alone is not mind-altering. According to the World Health Organization, clinical studies have reported that even high doses of oral CBD do not cause those psychoactive effects that are characteristic for THC.” While CBD does not produce a high, it does provide some pretty kickass mental and physical health benefits that might make you feel uplifted and happy!

CBD is natural

Many individuals are tired of the extreme side effects of modern medicine and are embracing alternatives that come from nature. People all over the world are turning to CBD because of its ability to relieve conditions in an all-natural way. The New York Times says that, “with roots in Central Asia, the plant is believed to have been first used medicinally — or for rituals — around 750 B.C., though there are other estimates, too.” Others say that the first documented use dates back to 2737 B.C. when Chinese Emperor Sheng Nung used an infused tea to aid with a variety of ailments. Queen Victoria is also believed to have utilized CBD to help with menstrual cramps during her reign, which ended in 1901. History of CBD aside, the point is that CBD is not something that was developed in a lab or has been a recent discovery. CBD naturally derives from a plant and it has been used for centuries.

CBD improves health and wellness

The positive effects of CBD range from mental health to physical alleviation. Relief from insomnia, seizures, acne, arthritis, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, high blood pressure, inflammation, and pain are all studied benefits of CBD. Its benefits have also been studied in sexual health, contributing to increased desire and decreased discomfort. CBD may also help reduce symptoms related to cancer, and side effects related to cancer treatment, like nausea, vomiting, and pain. Researchers have also studied CBD’s ability to act on the endocannabinoid system and other brain signaling systems which may provide benefits for those with neurological disorders. One of the most studied uses for CBD is in treating neurological disorders like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Last year, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a purified CBD extract, to treat seizure disorders in patients above 2 years old.

Side effects can happen

With anything you orally ingest or apply on your skin, side effects and reactions are a possibility. This is what the Harvard Medical Journal had to say about the safety of CBD: “Side effects of CBD include nausea, fatigue and irritability. CBD can increase the level in your blood of the blood thinner coumadin, and it can raise levels of certain other medications in your blood by the exact same mechanism that grapefruit juice does.” While the possible side effects of CBD are mild in nature, the success of your relationship with the natural remedy is based on two crucial factors which are the quality of the CBD and the dosage that you take. A report from the World Health Organization says that “in humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.” To avoid potential side effects, find a CBD source that is high quality and experiment to find what dosage is appropriate for your ailment.

CBD helps with sex

Heck yeah! Many studies about the application of CBD have reported a decrease in anxiety and a lower stress level among study participants. In turn, that can minimize distractions that can stop you from fully enjoying yourself during a sensual experience. This allows you to focus on intimacy, because it helps boost your mood by enhancing a “bliss” neurotransmitter called anandamide. Alex Capano, faculty member at the Lambert Center for the Study of Medicinal Cannabis and Hemp at Thomas Jefferson University, says that “CBD helps increase the natural neurotransmitters and endorphins that we make on our own that ultimately lead to a better sexual experience.”

When it comes to issues of lubrication during sex, Capano also explains that CBD may help. “There are so many cannabinoid receptors in reproductive organs and sexual tissue. CBD increases blood flow to tissues, which increases sensitivity and promotes the body’s own natural lubrications,” says Capano.

Dr. Evan Goldstein, founder and CEO of a practice that focuses on the sexual wellness, education, and comfort of the LGBTQ+ community, says he’s seen firsthand the positive effect of CBD on his patients. “These products work. They obviously need to be taken into context and used correctly, but they can enhance the experience and make things a little more pleasurable,” says Goldstein.

Whether you are interested in CBD to enhance sexual pleasure or to relieve anxiety, having all of the facts is the first step on your journey to a happier and healthier you. It’s all about finding the peace that you deserve today and always, and CBD just might be the perfect addition to your wellness routine.
